Outside our hotel in downtown Chicago, State Street was deserted after the blizzard struck. Brightly lit store windows beckoned to non-existent shoppers, and streetlights illuminated empty roads. Traffic lights signaled to no one in the night.

This was near the elevators down the hall from our room, #502.

During Chicago’s recent blizzard, we lost power. With no heat and nighttime temperatures dropping to near zero, we had to evacuate with our cat to a hotel. Built in 1890 by the architect Daniel Burnham, the Reliance Building was a delight to explore with camera in hand.

Photographed early November of last year, Fred was just as sweet as he was handsome. It was a joy to have him in our life, and he is sorely missed.

Photographed through an airplane window as the wings were deiced, color first caught my eye on this gray day. Then I noticed the interlocking shapes and lines.

Another find on the side of a dumpster in Asheville, North Carolina. This back street gave me a lot of presents to delight in over Christmas.

This sign made me smile when I came across it over Christmas. The background was desaturated in nature, so the colors really popped!

In an Asheville alleyway, I came across rusted dumpsters covered with beautiful color palettes. This one conforms to no rules of color theory, and yet seems to me beautifully harmonious.

Walking behind stores of a small shopping mall in Asheville, North Carolina, the hues and patterns of this door to a loading bay caught my eye through the falling snow.

I’m grateful to each of you who took the time to stop by this past year—for your comments and encouragement. Happy New Year, everyone!

A pattern of shadows.

Cleaning house, this is one from the archives I couldn’t quite bring myself to delete.

Though I often walk past this location, on that October morning the sunlight made a shadow pattern I’d never noticed before—and haven’t seen since.

New possibilities are always unfolding, even in familiar surroundings.
