Window Blind №11 (Unruly) ©2014 April Siegfried

I seem drawn to photograph window blinds, perhaps because they suggest qualities of the life lived behind them.

A fellow photographer from Thailand commented on this image, “Naughty!” That made me smile, and led to the subtitle “Unruly.”

Walking the streets before sunrise on my way to the lakefront, the colors in this image are as seen! It was only after returning home that I realized I’ve passed this window many times, and the blind is white.

I wonder what was shining through from behind…

This is the second capture of a scene photographed in my office three days earlier. While processing the first (shown to the right), I looked over at the same setting under similar light and thought “Hmmm, this isn’t what that was about.”

For the first, I was using a macro lens and emphasis is placed on the cord pull within its surroundings. For the second, I used my Lumix set to the 16:9 format. Now, emphasis is not so much on the cord pull but rather on the vertical pattern of light and line which originally caught my attention.

This scene was monochromatic, so it was photographed using the black and white Color Effect mode in the Lumix. As Craig Tanner has so often suggested, that let me preview and capture a black and white JPEG file for reference along with the full color RAW file for processing.

The title dates me! Read the lyrics or listen to the song—but be forewarned: I now have an earworm from the latter which is likely to last several days.

Cleaning house, this is one from the archives I couldn’t quite bring myself to delete.

Though I often walk past this location, on that October morning the sunlight made a shadow pattern I’d never noticed before—and haven’t seen since.

New possibilities are always unfolding, even in familiar surroundings.
